PARR, Catherine (1512-1548), sixth wife of Henry VIII. Letters Patent, signed and issued during her regency, 26 August 1544, exempting Sir Hugh Trevanyon, Constable of Launceston in Cornwall and Keper of the Feodary in the same Countie, from attendance on Henry VIII at war with France, witnessed by "our dearest and most entirely beloved Wife Katheryn Queene of Englande and General Governesse of the same …’ One page, on vellum, oblong, 6 x 14 ¼ inches, pale soiling.
Henry VIII went on his last, unsuccessful, campaign to France from July to September 1544, leaving Catherine as his regent. Because her regency council was composed of sympathetic members, including her uncle, Thomas Cranmer (the Archbishop of Canterbury) and Lord Hertford, Catherine obtained effective control and was able to rule as she saw fit. The present license is one of only four recorded (Letters and Papers of Henry VIII, no. 63).
