KENNINGTON, Eric, R.A. (1888-1960). Portrait of a Soldier. Charcoal and pastel on paper, signed at lower left "E. KENNINGTON." 15 x 12 inches. Framed. Provenance: Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967); and by descent; sold Christie's King Street 6 June 2007, lot 105.
"In the Fall of 1920 the poet Robert Graves, who had met Lawrence earlier in the year, took his friend to an exhibition of War pictures at London's Alpine gallery. The art impressed Lawrence. Particularly engaging were the works of an artist Lawrence did not know. Graves knew him, though: Eric Kennington, whom Graves had met in France during the War. Lawrence bought two of Kennington's pictures and left his address for the artist at the gallery" (Charles Grosvenor, The Portraits of T.E. Lawrence, p. 43). Lawrence's contemporaries, such as Siegfried Sassoon who collected this drawing, were equally enamored with Kennington's skills.
