A REMARKABLE CONVERGENCE OF SIGNATURES OF THREE CENTRAL FIGURES IN BRITAIN’S ROLE IN THE MIDDLE EAST in the early decades of the 20th century. Although not depicted in the photographs, the appearance of Churchill’s and Lawrence’s autograph on either side of the Sphinx is quite evocative. Allenby’s signature, in pencil, appears across one of the Pyramids. During the Great War Allenby led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force during the Sinai and Palestine Campaigns, and was Lawrence’s superior officer. After the war he served as High Commissioner for Egypt and the Sudan from 1919 until 1925.
