The text consists of Fremont's description of the third expedition, undertaken in 1845-46 but unpublished until 1848, with charts of astronomical observations. "The Map and Geographical Memoir... have a two-fold importance in history, first as contributions to geographical and cartographical knowledge in the year 1848, and second as historic documents concerning Fremont's notable Third Expedition" (Wheat).
