Specialist's Notes:
Aside from diamonds, sapphires are one of the most popular precious stones and technically, as a variety of the mineral corundum, can appear in many colors. However, blue is the color most associated with sapphires. Mined in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar, Cambodia and Australia, most sapphires are heat treated today to realize their desired color. Ceylon sapphires had their moment when HRH Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana Spencer with a 12 carat cushion-shaped stone, surrounded by diamonds.
