With stout wooden cross-piece carrying-handle with iron suspension ring, the side of the bucket stamped 'HMS / VICTORY / SNR', 12 in. (30.5 cm.) diam.
Provenance
The Society for Nautical Research, Portsmouth, obtained by The War Museum, New York from a prominent British naval family collection.

Lot Essay

The Society of Nautical Research was founded at the turn of the 20th century to restore H.M.S. Victory which had by that time begun to badly deteriorate. Funds were raised by the sale of surplus ephemera and of souvenirs manufactured from unusable parts including nails and copper sheathing.
