EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The first 10 ½ in. (26.7 cm.) long, swelling at the centre, two iron hoops remaining, and stamped on one end 'H.M.S. / VICTORY / PORTSMOUTH', the other with stamp of the Society of Nautical Research, the second 5 ¼ in. (13.2 cm.) long, with two iron bands, the ends respectively stamped 'RUM' and 'ADMIRALTY / RATION'

The Society of Nautical Research, Portsmouth, obtained by The War Museum, New York from a prominent British naval family collection.

Lot Essay

The Society of Nautical Research was founded at the turn of the 20th century to restore H.M.S. Victory which had by that time begun to badly deteriorate. Funds were raised by the sale of surplus ephemera and of souvenirs manufactured from unusable parts including nails and copper sheathing.
