MID-LATE 15TH CENTURY
Of wooden construction faced with leather or vellum, the outer covering sewn onto the body using natural hide stitches, of acutely corrugated form with strongly convex central gutter, the inner face painted dark red and fitted with hide loops top and bottom together with a T-shaped grip of course wood and hide, the outer face painted (restored) with a Gothic inscription surrounding a central panel of red scales, 21 in. (53 cm.) high
