Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial and raised steel indexes in 1942 and its subsequent sale on October 6th of the same year.
Reference 96 is a landmark model in the history of Patek Philippe. It is the first model of the “Stern Era”, launched in 1932, the same year the Stern family acquired the company, and it is also the first model bearing a reference number.
Furthermore, this reference is considered the archetype for the vintage “Calatrava” style, distinguished by the flowing lines of the case and subtle downturned lugs. This style, which remained in use for decades and which gave the name to many contemporary Patek Philippe models, is universally considered as an undisputed epitome of elegance.
The present example is offered in stainless steel, the most appealing case material for vintage Patek Philippe watches, but it also features applied Breguet numerals, another feature at the top of collectors’ wish lists.
To the best of our knowledge this watch has never before been offered in public.
