Lot Essay

The Romance of the Western Chamber, written in the Yuan dynasty by Wang Shifu, is a popular source of inspiration for designs on Chinese Export porcelain. The scene found on these dishes depicts the sad parting of the scholar Zhang Sheng, who is travelling to study for his Civil exams, and Cui Yingying, with whom he has fallen in love with.
