Lot Essay

The Elizabethan-style cabinet's gothic-arched glazing pattern relates to ones issued in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book, 1793, pl. 41, and in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 2nd ed., 1793, pl. 16, no. 1. The cluster-columned pilasters are also supported on stump feet that are bobbin-turned in the Elizabethan fashion, introduced around 1800. Similar feet and the same cut-cornered moulding featured on a clothes-press sold Christie's, London, 19 September 2002, lot 164 (£3,585 including premium).
