FIRST EDITION. In 1764 Chandler joined the Society of Dilettanti, becoming its treasurer and leader of the expedition to Greece and Asia Minor which the society sponsored. Accompanied by Nicholas Revett and the watercolourist William Edmund Pars, he spent nearly a year in Asia Minor before arriving in Athens in August 1765. The expedition resulted in three major works – the Ionian Antiquities 1769-1797, Inscriptiones antiquae, 1774, and the two volumes of Travels in Asia Minor and Travels in Greece.
