Lot Essay

This painting was acquired during a visit Robert Ellsworth made to China in 1980. When he met Fan Zeng, the artist was inspired to select this painting he had made of the great Tang-dynasty calligrapher Huaisu (703-after 799), dedicated it to his visitor in the inscription, and presented it to Mr. Ellsworth as a gift.
