TWO ENAMELED PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLES
JINGDEZHEN KILNS, 1820-1880
The first bottle, 1830-1880, is decorated in polychrome enamels with a scene known as ‘the three sours’, depicting Confucius, the Buddha and Laozi each dipping their fingers into a vat of vinegar, the expressions on their faces showing their different reactions to the sour vinegar and typify the outlook of their respective religions, all set on an opaque black ground. The second bottle, 1820-1880, is painted in black enamel with vessels holding bamboo, chrysanthemum and Buddha's hand citron.
3 1/8 and 2 3/8 in. (8 and 7.3 cm.) high, glass and stone stoppers
