Lot Essay

The combination of these two symbols of fertility, a katydid and frogs, on the same bottle is unusual. A bottle combining both frogs and katydids was sold at Christie's New York, Important Chinese Snuff Bottles from the J&J Collection, Part II, 30 March 2005, sale 1464, lot 37.

Also compare to a Daoguang-marked bottle decorated with frogs, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 2003, pl. 350.
