The Origins of the Land (Tate, London) was made for the 'Land of Britain' pavilion at the Festival of Britain exhibition, devoted to the themes of the forces of natures, held on the South Bank in 1951. The painting was intended to set the mood for the pavilion which was the first space visitors would see on entering the exhibition.
