A nanmu platform in three sections, dating to the 18th century, illustrated by Kai-Yin Lo in Classical and Vernacular Chinese Furniture in the Living Environment, Hong Kong, 1998, pp. 98-9, suggests that furniture of this design may come from the Jiangnan Region. Constructed in modular sections with flush-corner sides, the sections can be pushed together to form a larger platform or day bed, or be separated for smaller platforms. Box-form sections, such as the present example, could function as daybed, platforms or large, low tables.
