The group is carved in the round as a scholar stroking his beard while being observed by both a monkey peering around the side of a bamboo chair beside him and a bird perched on an openwork branch of a prunus tree that grows from the rocks that form the reverse. The semi-translucent stone is of pale greenish-white color.
