The exquisite marquetry of this casket recalls the work of Jean-Pierre Latz. Its naturalistic flowers and distinctive seed pods, a particular leitmotif, as are the vivid contrasts between light and dark woods. Similar marquetry examples by Latz are on a secretaire en pente in Francois de Salverte, Les Ebenistes du XVIIIe Siecle (Paris and Bruxelles, 1923), p.185 and one in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siecle, Paris, 1939, p.488 and was sold at Christie’s London, 12 December 2002, lot 110.
