"Dieffenbach's treatise records the first successful attempt to correct strabismus by servering the tendons of the eye muscles, an operation that had been suggested by Louis Stromeyer. Dieffenbach performed 1,200 such operations, and shared with Stromeyer the Institut de France's Monthyon Prize for his pioneering studies of this procedure ...." (Norman)
