MEDITERRANEAN. -- Jean JAUBERT. “Recueil des bâtiments dans lesquels a navigué Jean Jaubert de Marseille de 1776 jusqu’à [1815].” N.p., ca1815.
2° (327 x 212 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 66 leaves, comprising title-page, 73 pages of text and 45 full-page watercolors. Contemporary limp vellum (worn and soiled); later chemise of contemporary manuscript on vellum.
A fine illustrated logbook of a sailor from Marseille, covering a period of forty years. Jaubert tells of his embarkation in 1776 until his capture 3 November 1805, his detention in Dartmoor Prison until 27 May 1814 and his last shipments from June 1814 to November 5, 1817. The manuscript provides considerable insight into the marine environment of the late 18th century, the important traffic in the Mediterranean and beyond, with further first-hand accounts of the battles of Aboukir and Trafalgar and the lives of French sailors on British prisoner ships.
