Third French edition. “Niebuhr, though German born, took part as astronomer and naturalist in the Royal Danish expedition to Arabia, 1763-37. His accounts are probably the best and most authentic of their day. Though Arabia was his chief concern, his travels extended into Egypt, Persia, and Hindustan” (Cox). His was the first European attempt to offer a complete account of Arabia, and was very popular – two previous editions of Mourier’s translation were published in 1773 and 1774. Brunet IV: 74; Cox I, p.237.
