ISLAMIC MANUSCRIPT – Koran, in Arabic. [Ottoman Turkey:] Dated in colophon: 23 Ramadan 1210 A.H. (i.e. 1795).
8° (165 x 105 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER, signed ‘Ali ‘Almi Al-Asbatni. 301 leaves, text in black and red inks, 15 lines per page, sectional headings in white ink against burnished gold, with floral designs in various colors, writing area approximately 110 x 60 mm in frame of burnished gold and hairlines of black and red, marginal ornaments in burnished gold and various colors, scattered marginal notations in red or black. Later Islamic binding of dark-brown calf, borders roll-tooled in gilt around single panels on both covers, with centrally gilt-stamped arabesques and corner ornaments, all containing raised designs which have been painted red, with additional decoration composed of small floral dots, fore-edge flap similarly decorated with arabesque and corner ornaments, fore-edge spine decorated with gilt floral dots, text-block spine with gilt double-fillet border (fore-edge flap and text-block spine restored with original pieces laid down).
