MONTANUS, Arnoldus (1625?-1683). Ambassades Mémorables de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales des Provinces Unies, Vers les Empereurs du Japon. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs, 1680.
2 parts in one volume, 2° (339 x 224 mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved additional title, engraved head-piece, two engraved initials, 26 folding or double-page engraved maps and views, 70 engraved illustrations in the text. (Some spotting and light browning, closed tear on T1 crossing text.) Eighteenth-century red French morocco gilt, sides with gilt fillet borders with the arms of the Comtesse de Provence at center, spine in seven compartments with six raised bands, gilt-lettered green morocco spine label in one, the remainder elaborately gilt with floral, leaf and dot ornament tools, edges gilt. Provenance: “Van Meurs” (contemporary signature? at head of title-page); Marie Joséphine Louise of Savoy (Maria Giuseppina Luigia, 1753-1810) was the wife of the future King Louis XVIII of France. She was a princess of Savoy by birth, became Countess of Provence upon her marriage in 1771, and then titular Queen of the French when her husband's nephew, the titular King Louis XVII of France, died in 1795 (armorial binding).
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. A translation of Gedenkwaerdige Gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maetschappy in't Vereenigde Nederland, aen de kaisaren van Japan, which was first published in Amsterdam in 1668 (see Nordenskiöld 590). An account of the two Dutch missions of 1649 and 1661.
“This book remains one of the most curious of the numerous works of travel in the Orient during the 17th century” (Cox I, p. 325). The plates are reimpressions of those in the first edition with Dutch text, except that most plates have added captions in French; some plates also have added captions in English or German, and one new plate has been added.
