Engraved frontispiece, one head-piece, 45 engraved plates, plans and maps (mostly double-page or folding). (Engraved title margin browned, occasional very minor spotting or browning.) Contemporary speckled calf gilt (minor wear to joints and extremities).

FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. Kaempfer was a naturalist, traveller and doctor who, on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, visited Japan in 1690. He remained for two years and gathered an enormous amount of information and specimens: the important botanical material was bought, after his death, by Sir Hans Sloane, who organized the English translation of this work.
