LE VAILLANT, François (1753-1824). Second Voyage de F. Le vaillant, dans l’Intérior de l’Afrique. Paris: Desray, 1803.
3 volumes, 8° (192 x 120 mm). Half-titles. 22 engraved plates (8 folding), large engraved folding map. (A few short tears at gutter of folding map crossing border, a few plates shaved close affecting imprint, some occasional offsetting.) Contemporary tan tree calf, flat spines gilt red and green morocco lettering-pieces. (Some light wear, otherwise fine.) Provenance: Sidney Hellman Ehrman (1905-1930) historian (bookplate); the East and West Shop (bookseller’s label on lower pastedown).
Later edition of Le Vaillant’s second voyage. Le Vaillant’s work (comprising both voyages) “was attacked when published, and some of the incidents were declared to be either exaggerated or altogether invented. It is, however, interesting as an account of South Africa at a time when comparatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers” (Cox I, p.389). A fine copy in a fine contemporary binding. Brunet III: 1034.
