CAMPBELL, John, Reverend (1766-1840). Travels in South Africa, undertaken at the request of the London missionary society; being a narrative of a second journey in the interior of that country. London: Printed for the Society by francis Westley, 1822.
2 volumes in one, 8° (212 x 132 mm). 12 hand-colored aquatint plates, engraved hand-colored folding map. (Map with a few tears and repairs at folds crossing image, some mostly marginal dampstaining, some browning.) Contemporary half calf, smooth spine gilt, red morocco lettering-piece, edges sprinkled red (some stains and wear). Provenance: W. Pennington (bookbinder ticket).
FIRST EDITION. Campbell, a Scottish missionary and explorer, made two tours of London Missionary Society stations in South Africa. He authored one of the most valuable accounts of the people of southern Botswana and western Transvaal in both of his published accounts. His first work, Travels in South Africa, was published in 1815 and details his first journey; his second, also entitled Travels in South Africa, describes his second journey.
