CIEZA DE LÉON, Pedro de (1518-60). La Prima Parte Dell’Historie del Peru. –La Seconda Parte Delle Histoire Dell’India. Venice: Giordano Ziletti, 1560-1565.
2 volumes, 8° (Peru 152 x 103 mm, India 143 x 100 mm). Woodcut devices on title-pages and final blank vol.I. (Some light mostly marginal staining, small hole title-page vol.II.) Uniformly bound in modern blind-stamped leather (some light wear). Provenance: Early ownership signature partially effaced (flyleaf vol.I); E.W.L (stamp on verso of title-page vol.II).
Later edition of the Italian translation of Cieza de Léon’s work. Sabin notes the second part is by Gomara, but is usually bound with the first part by Cieza. “Cieza de Léon was in the Americas from 1532 to 1552 with the Spanish armies. He wrote a history of Nueva España (Mexico) in addition to this work on Peru…He started writing his history at Popayán in 1541 and finished in in Lima in 1550. The Chronica was divided into four parts; the first part, here, was the only one to be published in the sixteenth century” (Hill pp.103-104).
