ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST IMPORTANT SIXTEENTH CENTURY BOOKS IN THE FIELD OF AMERICAN HISTORY
“La seconde edition,” but actually the FIRST EDITION, second issue, differing from the first issue only by the addition, on final printed leaf [ggiij] of two lines which state that it was printed “pour la seconde edition” in September of 1582 (the first issue was April). After reviewing in Book One the Spanish and Portuguese exploration of the Old World, Book Two is devoted to the voyages and discoveries of Columbus, Pizarro's expedition, the French and English expeditions to North America and the Spanish discovery of Florida. The French colonization efforts in Florida are treated at considerable length including the two voyages of Capt. Jean Ribault and that of de Gourges. The infamous massacres at Fort Caroline are related. Book Three gives the Vespuccius and Magellan navigations and the Villegagnon expedition to Brazil. Les Trois Mondes is important for presenting the first French voyages to Florida and Brazil. The world map is a reduction of Ortelius’ world map of 1570, or perhaps copied from the full-size woodcut in Belle-Forest’s La Cosmographie Universelle which had been published in Paris several years earlier.
