8° (166 x 105 mm). 9 woodcuts, of which 8 full-page and one folding. (Some occasional light staining). Vellum over boards, arms of John Earl of Bute on covers (later ties added). Provenance: John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792), styled Lord Mount Stuart, Prime Minister under George III (bookplate on title verso); Camille Aboussouan (bookplates, sale Sotheby’s 18 June 1993, lot 563).
Fourth edition. Lery's narrative of his voyage to Rio de Janeiro and the colony of Villegagnon "is full of curious observations about fish, tropical temperatures, atmospheric phenomena of the Equator, and so forth. Besides an account of events, Lery described Brazilian flora, fauna and the Indians. He published a dialogue between a Frenchman and a Tupi which is a document of great linguistic value" (Borba de Moraes). Alden & Landis 594/31; Borba de Moraes (1983), p.471]; Sabin 40151.
