BANCHIERI, Andriano (1568-1634). La nobilta dell’asino di attabalippa dal Peru. Venice: Bareszzo Barezzi, 1599.

4° (176 x 121 mm). Engraved title, nine woodcuts in text. (Trimmed closely shaving title, some headlines and shoulder notes.) Modern calf antique, spine gilt.

Early reprint of Banchieri’s work, after the 1588 first edition, believed to have been printed in Bologna. Adriano Banchieri was renowned in his time as an organist, but also worked as a composer, dramatist and theorist. Of his non-musical works, La noblita dell asino, which promotes the ass as King of Beasts, is the most famous, and was very popular in the author's lifetime. His writings in other fields were often issued under the name Camillo Scaliggeri dalla Fratta, and in the present case with the additional pseudonym of Attabalippa dal Peru. Adams B-142; Alden & Landis 599/10.
