12° (175 x 106 mm). Engraved folding map. 20th-century green levant morocco, spine gilt, edges gilt, by Emile Roussell.

“THIS WORK IS VERY RARE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE MAP WHICH IS MISSING IN MOST COPIES” (Borba de Moraes)

FIRST EDITION. “Many consider this book by Pagan to be merely a paraphrased version of Acuña. However, a more attentive reading will reveal other sources as declared, in fact, in the title ... The value of Pagan's work is shown in his dedication to Cardinal Mazarin, in which he urges him to take possession of the Amaz0n and establish several colonies. He proves that it would not be a difficult enterprise and large armies and many pieces of artillery would not be necessary. The map drawn by Pagan is of great importance as a proof of the French ambitions in the Amazon regions” (Borba de Moraes II, pp. 646-647). Cioranescu XVII, 51721; Field 1164n; JCB (1919) II, p. 452; Sabin 58141 (1656 edition).
