FIRST FRENCH EDITION, one of six French editions issued by numerous booksellers in the same year differing primarily as to the title-page, translated from the author’s 1684 work. “The Historia, covering the three years between the appointment of Cortés to command the invading force and the fall of the city of Mexico, deservedly ranks as a Spanish prose classic” (Hill).
