BACQUEVILLE DE LA POTHERIE, Claude-Charles Le Roy (1668-1738). Histoire de l'Amerique septentrionale ... Contenant le vayage du Fort de Nelson, dans la Baye d'Hudson, a l'extremite de l'Amerique. Paris: Jean-Luc Nion and Fracois Didot, 1722.

4 volumes, 8° (162 x 91 mm). Titles printed in red and black. 3 engraved folding maps of Hudson’s Bay, Montreal, and Nouvelle France, 25 engraved plates including one leaf of engraved music printed on the recto and verso. Contemporary French speckled calf (some wear at spine ends, a bit dry).

Second edition, first published in 1716 as Nouveau voyage du Canada et de la Nouvelle-France; in 1723 it appeared as Voyage de l'Amerique… “De la Potherie's work, it will be seen, is a history of the Indian nations of Canada, being entirely devoted to that subject and the relations of the French with the natives. Much of his work is written from his own observation, and the remainder seems to have been derived from authentic sources. A comparison of De la Potherie's volumes with unquestioned authorities, like Le Clercq and Sagard, does not sustain the criticism of Father Charlevoix copied by Mr. Rich. Most of the twenty-seven plates are illustrative of scenes or peculiarities in Indian life” (Field, p. 16). Field 66 (1753 edition); Howes B23; Quérard, vol. 1, p. 150; Rich 1722-7; Sabin 2692.
