4° (246 x 196 mm). Engraved publisher's device on title, engraved head-piece by L. D. Gobin after de Flote St. Joseph, 6 engraved folding charts by Dheulland after Chabert, one folding astrological table, and one printed folding table. (First map with a few nicks at edges, a short marginal tear repaired on verso, and some creasing, some occasional pale spotting or staining.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, preserving part of original spine).
FIRST EDITION. Although only twenty-nine in 1753, Chabert had already received official recognition for his work in rectifying the previously incorrect longitude of Buenos Ayres. Chabert set sail from Brest in 1750, and spent a year surveying the coasts of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, having established his astronomical instruments in the governor of Louisburg's garden. The work was highly praised by the French Academy of Science, and upheld as a model to future navigators. Howgego C87; Sabin 11723.
