3 volumes, 8° (242 x 161 mm). 156 stipple-engraved plates finished by hand after P. Bessa, P.J. Redouté, H.J. Redouté and others. (Lacking half-titles and possibly several postliminary leaves, see below.) 19th-century half calf, marbled edges (upper cover vol. 1 detached, some wear to hinges and joints). Provenance: William Hughes, 1st Baron Dinorben (1767-1852) British philanthropist and politician (armorial bookplate on pastedown).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, in part a translation of Michaux’s Histoire des Arbres forestiers de l’Amérique septentrionale, published in Paris 1810-1813. This edition was published in three volumes, with volumes I and II each in 2 half volumes, and with volume 3 in 3 “half” volumes. The North American Sylva became the standard work on American trees, and was frequently reprinted through 1865.
