2 volumes, 2° (384 x 250 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, numerous engraved plates. (Some leaves with pale spotting.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, sides decorated with the arms of Louis XIV within a central panel, corners with crowned royal cypher (Olivier 2494 fer 9 and 21), spines in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, the rest gilt with central royal cypher of Louis XIV (some light wear). Provenance: Louis XIV (binding); William Beckford, tenth Duke of Hamilton (1760-1844) English author, bibliophile (bookplate, his sale Sotheby’s 1882); purchased by Bernard Quaritch (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Lobineau, a Benedictine monk, was a student of Bernard de Montfaucon at the Abbey of St-Germain-des-Prés, part of a scholarly community known as the “Bernardins." The first volume relates the history of Brittany through 1532, and the second provides evidence and documentation; a third volume was planned, but never published. See Brunet III: 1135.
