Lot Essay

Etienne-Maurice Falconet was one of the most important artistic figures of 18th century France. The present marble figures are entirely consistent with other known small-scale marbles produced by Falconet whilst he served as director of sculpture works at the Manufactory of Sèvres (1757-1766), including examples in the Wallace Collection, London, and the Frick Collection in New York (Pope-Hennessey, loc. cit.).
