Lot Essay

In 1767, Jean Francois Joseph Rosset, dit Rosset père (1706-1786), began to specialize in producing small busts of 18th century philosophers, in marble, alabaster, pierre de jura, and ivory. He worked closely with his sons who continued to produce these busts for several decades. The present bust, signed a claude/ 1770, is most likely by his son Claude-Antoine Rosset (1749 or 1759-1818).
