Le peintre James Otto Lewis accompagna le Gouverneur du Michigan Lewis Cass dans ses expéditions destinées à conclure des traités avec les tribus indiennes de la région des Grands Lacs en 1825-1827. Publié à Philadelphie en l’espace de quelques mois, en livraisons de 8 planches, The Aboriginal Port Folio devait comprendre 80 planches lithographiées d’après les dessins de Lewis et coloriées à la main. Les difficultés de la publication (l’éditeur fit faillite quand s’imprimait la 9ème livraison), la hâte nécessaire pour devancer le projet concurrent de McKenney et Hall (History of the Indian Tribes of North America) eurent raison du projet. La plupart des exemplaires rencontrés témoignent de ces difficultés, et comportent seulement 64 planches, correspondant à 8 livraisons. Quelques-uns en comportent 72 (9 livraisons). Mais on ne compte qu’une demi-douzaine d’exemplaires avec les 80 planches (aucun passé en vente depuis 25 ans en dehors de l’exemplaire Siebert). Publication of the work was costly and time consuming. The work was originally issued in 10 parts with 8 plates per number in printed wrappers. The publisher was forced into bankruptcy while part nine was in the press, however, reducing the edition and forcing part ten to be just barely finished and sparsely distributed. The title and three advertisement leaves (the 2nd Advertisement is here in first state, with 38 lines) are the only text in the work.
