ISAAC FROST (FL. 1840s)

Two Systems of Astronomy: first, the Newtonian System... second, the system in accordance with the Holy Scriptures. London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., 1846. 4° (308 x 248mm). 11 engraved plates printed in colours. Original brown cloth, titled in gilt on upper cover (covers faintly rubbed).

FINE COPY OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE MUGGLETONIAN TRACT. The Muggletonians were named after Lodowicke Muggleton (1609-1658), a tailor, who along with his cousin John Reeve, experienced divine revelation in 1651. Together they formed a small Protestant Christian movement whose beliefs included a hostility to philosophical reason, a scriptural understanding of how the universe works and a belief that God appeared directly on Earth as Christ Jesus. One of the characteristics of the movement was that it was non-evangelical, but during the nineteenth century the sect became increasingly vocal and published several books intended for general audiences. The present lot is a good example, a lavishly illustrated work outlining the anti-Newtonian cosmology of the Muggletonians. Although partial sets of plates have sold recently at auction, NO COMPLETE COPY OF THIS BOOK HAS SOLD AT AUCTION SINCE 1984 (APBC/RBH).
