PALESTINE -- 1929 RIOTS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS

A group of 10 press photographs, dated 1927-1930, various sizes (mostly 200 x 250mm, a few smaller), most with typescript descriptions on versos, stamps and serial numbers of various American press agencies. (One photograph irregularly torn at margin, a couple of other dogeared and creased.)

LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHS FOCUSING ON THE EVENTS OF THE 1929 RIOTS IN PALESTINE. The earliest picture, dated 1927, is of the Western, or Wailing, Wall, the changes to the status quo of which triggered the disturbances. Two photographs show Jewish victims, one being helped onto a camel. One picture shows the High Commissioner, Sir John Chancellor (see lot 377), making a speech prior to his return to Jerusalem from London in the aftermath of the events, while two images show demonstrations by Jews in New York against British inaction. Photographs of Arab interest include a mass meeting of Arabs just by the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem, while another shows a shut Arab shop with a black flag hung outside it in a sign of mourning and protest on the anniversary of the publication of the Balfour Declaration.
