CORPS OF MILITARY POLICE, PALESTINE, 1938
Photograph album of an unidentified member of the Corps of Military Police, Palestine, c.1938. Approximately 158 photographs, sizes ranging from 30 x 40mm to 122 x 178mm, mounted and captioned on the pages of an album, oblong large 4to (275 x 370mm), together with a quantity of commercial photographs and postcards, the majority depicting Biblical sites and scenes, with other ephemera including an illicit postage stamp with the motto 'Palestine for the Arabs'. Contemporary imitation reptile backed boards, upper cover with decorative harbour scene (spine worn, the whole somewhat loose).
GRITTY DOCUMENTARY IMAGES TAKEN DURING THE ARAB REBELLION, the photographs showing scenes of disturbances and the imposition of order, including: 'Interrogating suspects in Jerusalem', 'President of military court investigating the scene of crime, Jerusalem', views of 'A bus which collided with a train' (7), 'Public hanging in Syria',(2), 'A bomb casualty Jerusalem 1938', 'Three suspects arrested in Jerusalem', 'Riots in Jerusalem', 'Seige [sic] of the City of Jerusalem', 'Railway station sabotaged', 'Personal search', 'Bringing in a prisoner' and 'Suspects under guard', also formal and informal shots of fellow soldiers at work and rest, mostly of fellow privates and NCOs but also including one of 'General Wavell and family in Jerusalem' and another of 'C.I.G.S. General Gort in Haifa', topographical views of Haifa, Jerusalem, Tripoli, Beirut, the Dead Sea and elsewhere, also depictions of locals including a child, a water carrier, the cleaner of the military courts in Jerusalem, a Syrian traffic policeman and others.
