JOSEPH MARY NAGEL JEFFRIES (1880-1960)
Palestine: the reality. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1939. 8° (230 x 150mm). Maps on endpapers. (2 index leaves just starting, occasional faint spotting to half-title, title, a few contents and index leaves.) Original brown cloth (head- and tailcaps expertly repaired, without dust-jacket).
EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION stating the Arab case for Palestine and denouncing Zionist claims. An author and journalist, Jeffries was a Daily Mail correspondent from 1914 to 1933, serving as a war correspondent in France for the paper during World War I. In 1922, he accompanied Lord Northcliffe to Palestine. It has been suggested that the rarity of this book can be accounted for by the Jewish Agency buying up as much of the stock as possible and destroying it.
