THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN MANDATORY PALESTINE
[Photograph album.] Through Palestine 1944-5. [Palestine: 1944-1945.] 76 original photographs, of which 8 large format (approx. 108 x 165mm) and 68 small format (approx. 56 x 81mm) on 44 leaves, and 2 postcards mounted on one leaf, pen and ink decorative title, the album neatly ordered with manuscript titles to sections, neat ink captions to photographs and ink ruled borders to leaves. Contemporary blue cloth binder (extremities faintly rubbed).
Interesting album of photographs taken by a RAF officer based with No. 1 (Middle East) Aircrew Receiving Centre, Jerusalem, from late 1944 through 1945. The album opens with 4 images of his transit across the desert from Iraq to Jerusalem. Alongside the more usual photographs of the tourist sights, there are rarer images of the British Residency (complete with motorcade), street life within the Old City including views of the Western Wall, and 7 photographs of a Jewish settlement. Geographically, the album covers Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Haifa, Bethany, Jericho and the Dead Sea. There are some particularly good images of the modernist architecture of Tel-Aviv.
