6TH AIRBORNE DIVISION, PALESTINE, 1945-1947
POWELL, Norman Stanley. Palestine 1945 to 1947 with the 6th Airborne Division' [Photograph album.] Palestine, c.1947. Approximately 172 black and white photographs, the majority 65 x 90mm, mounted on the pages of an album and neatly captioned in manuscript, oblong large 4to, (240 x 355mm), also including a 'Certificate of Pilgrimage' to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre signed by Archimandrite Kyriakos, 25 November 1945. Contemporary decorative leather binding, upper cover with inset wood panel with inlaid brass plaque, stamped 'Made in Palestine' (extremities rubbed).
IMPORTANT ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN DURING THE DECLINING FINAL YEARS OF BRITISH RULE IN PALESTINE. It includes photographs of the 'King David Hotel Bomb Outrage' (7 shots), 'Blazing Oil Tanks at Haifa' (3), an 'Illegal Immegrant [sic] Ship' (4), 'Major Dorans house in Tel Aviv after it was destroyed by the Stern Gang -- Sep 1946', arms caches found at settlements in South Palestine (4), 'Ramat Gan Settlement Search' (2). Also included are topographical views of Tel-Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Athlit Castle, Bethlehem and Jerusalem including the Temple area and the Wailing Wall, together with a number of other views of ethnographic and topographical interest, and shots of fellow-soldiers at work and rest in a number of sections entitled 'Christmas 1946', 'Para Descent', 'Desert Scheme' and 'Desert Convoy.'
