The exterior of each vase is intricately decorated with two cartouches enclosing riverside landscape scenes depicting figures at leisurely pursuits, encircled by a band of stylised phoenixes and separated by colourful floral scrolls set against a bright yellow ground, with key-fret borders surrounding the mouth and the foot. There is a pair of monster-mask handles with loose rings to the sides.
