A GROUP OF THREE SILK BROCADES AND FOUR APPLIQUES
19TH-20TH CENTURY
The group comprises: a red and green-ground silk cover embroidered with chrysanthemum scroll; a blue-ground cover embroidered with stylised floral and geometric panels; and a midnight-blue-ground silk cover embroidered with a central panel of Buddhist lions surrounded by cranes, birds, hares and various flowers; a pair of embroidered peony and phoenix appliqués; and a pair of embroidered peony and butterflies appliqués.

Collection of Dr Richard Brown, a Canadian doctor and missionary who purchased them as he travelled and worked across Asia in the 1930s and while working with Dr. Norman Bethune (1890-1939) in China.
The pieces were purchased from his widow, Elsa Brown by the vendor's mother and grandmother.
