A POLYCHROME WOOD CARVING OF SAMANTABHADRA ON AN ELEPHANT
SONG-YUAN DYNASTY (960-1368)
The Buddhist deity is carved seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne supported by a caparisoned elephant on a rectangular base. The eyes are downcast and the hair is worn in a topknot beneath a crown. The robes are worn loosely draped and open at the chest to reveal a necklace. There are traces of red, green, blue and black pigment and gilt.
