A PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE RED-GROUND 'DOUBLE GOURD' VASES
19TH CENTURY
Each vase is decorated with two gourd-form handles and double gourd-form cartouches, one enclosing a scene of two boys attending a lesson, below the inscription jiao zi cheng ming, ‘leading sons to success through education’, and the other depicting a bearded man and three boys at play in a garden, below the inscription zi zun wan dai, ‘ten thousand generations of sons and grandsons’. The cartouches are surrounded by a dense network of gourds and leafy vines, set against a ruby-red ground. There is an apocryphal Yongzheng seal mark to the base.
